PHANARIOTES PROJECT

The Hellenic Studies Program at California State University, Sacramento, is participating in an international research project on the Phanariotes. The goals of the project are to: 1) put together a documentary film and 2) write an academic study of the Phanariotes. This site has been created in an effort to contact anyone who may be aware of any of the descendants of the Phanariotes.
Overall, the Phanariotes project is based out of the Centre International de Recherches Helleniques (International Center for Hellenic Research) at the University of Marseilles, France. Dr. Erato Paris is spearheading this project and has enlisted the support of various universities throughout Europe and the United States. As well, Dr. Paris has received the financial support of Hellenic ministries, private foundations, etc., to cover all the necessary expenses. Presently, Dr. Paris is shooting a documentary of the Phanariotes using the research she has amassed to date.
In addition to the Phanariotes film, the academic study is projected to be a five-year undertaking. We hope to be as thorough and comprehensive in our research as possible. Here is a rough list of last names (spellings can vary) that are considered to be Phanariot: Ipsilantis, Kandakouzinos, Komninos, Mavrokordatos, Mourouzis, Negroponte, Palaiologos, Rodokanakis,Vlastos, Zafeiropoulos, and Zarifis. If you think that you might be a descendant of the Phanariotes – or know of someone who is a descendant - Dr. Paris (or I) would like to speak with you to see if you might be willing to offer any information for the academic study. We would also ask that you following the link below and submit your contact information.
Overall, we hope that the completion of this project will shed light on this influential community.
We look forward to speaking with you!
Respectfully,
